Muskie School of Public Service

Graduate Programs

At the Muskie School, we are educating leaders and developing innovative ways to practice public service at state, regional and local levels. Our faculty, staff and students engage directly in the communities we serve, reflect on what we learn, and share new knowledge to benefit the common good.

Our extensive applied research programs throughout Maine and the nation provide students with rich opportunities for real-world experience. Many of our students are directly involved in designing and evaluating programs, analyzing new policies, and conducting research and community outreach around contemporary public policy issues.

What We Offer

The Muskie School offers master's degrees in community planning and development, health policy and management, and public policy and management. Each program provides the necessary skills and expertise to obtain leadership positions in the private, public and nonprofit sectors.

Joint degrees are available between all three master's programs and the University of Maine School of Law. Joint degrees are also available between the health policy and management program and the USM School of Business.

The Muskie School has a doctorate in public policy for students who are interested in studying and influencing critical public policy issues facing Maine and the nation.

The School's certificates of graduate study require four to five classes and a simple application process. They are ideal for professionals considering a career shift or looking to increase their knowledge in a particular filed. They are also valuable supplements to the master's degree.
