Muskie School of Public Service

Distance Education

The Muskie School provides distance education opportunities to students throughout the state via UNET (University of Maine System Network for Education and Technology Services). All eight of the Muskie certificate programs are offered in part over UNET at the seven University of Maine System campuses. The certificate in Applied Research and Evaluation Methods can be completed entirely over the web. Most classes are available to matriculated, certificate, and other interested students.

What is Distance Education?

Distance education courses are delivered by three methods:

Interactive Television (ITV)
Generally, ITV courses are two-way audio, one-way video. This means if you are located where the class originates, the instructor will be in the classroom with you. If you are at a location where the course is received, you can see the instructor via a television monitor, but the instructor cannot see you. Questions and comments from a receive location are called into the classroom where the instructor responds by cordless telephone. All ITV classes are taped and are held on reserve in the USM Portland Library.
Compressed Video (CV)
Courses delivered via CV are designed for small seminars and are located on campuses only. Unlike ITV, compressed video courses are delivered via two-way video/two-way audio. Persons at both sites can hear and see each other. CV classes are not taped.
Internet-Based Courses
Web-based versions of the following courses are offered over the internet. For information on registration please contact Dan Roach at the Muskie School: (207) 780-4188, or email danr@usm.maine.edu.
