Muskie School of Public Service

Master's in Health Policy & Management

Alumni Profile

Corey Fravert

"My field placement allowed me to gain invaluable experience and ultimately led to a tremendous job opportunity."

Corey Fravert came to the Muskie School to find new, innovative solutions to the problems facing health care and to advance his career in managing successful health care organizations.

Mindful of his career goals, faculty helped Corey obtain an internship at Maine Medical Center's Physician Hospital Organization. This placement allowed Corey to apply what he had learned and network with prominent individuals in the health care field. Corey is now administrator of Northern New England's premier neurosurgery and spine firm.

The Health Policy & Management (HPM) program prepares graduates for the rapidly changing challenges confronting today's complex health care systems. Working with nationally-recognized faculty, students build the necessary skills to analyze options, define strategies, and manage solutions for the effective delivery of health services.

The program is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education and meets the criteria for most employer and military educational benefit programs.

Build Your Career. Build Your Community.

Graduates hold leadership positions in the private, public and nonprofit sectors at local, state and national levels such as senior managers at hospitals and large health organizations, public health services directors, health policy analysts and lobbyists.

Gain Real-World Experience.

The HPM program is closely connected to the Muskie School's Institute for Health Policy, a nationally recognized center for health policy and services research. In addition to state-level research in Maine, the Institute has a substantial national research portfolio.

Students have a unique opportunity to work with research staff in many of these program areas. Program areas include: rural health policy; chronic illness, disability and aging; quality management and improvement; health care access and financing; and mental health.

Accessible Options for Working Professionals

Credit Requirements

Forty-seven credits of coursework are required to complete the master's in health policy and management. Coursework is characterized by both individual and group assignments designed to build skills and to integrate learning across the curriculum. In addition to course content, writing and communication skills are developed throughout the curriculum. Organizing and presenting material orally to students and faculty is a performance requirement in several courses, as are writing assignments of increasing complexity. Students are required to declare a track in either Management or Policy. The declaration establishes the additional content courses that the student is required to successfully complete.
