Muskie School of Public Service

Prospective Students

The Muskie School's hands-on approach to the educational process directs you toward important work. Work that matters. Work that will change people's lives. Work that will change your life.

The master's degree programs build their curricula around a common core of public policy and management classes. The degrees include field experience and a final capstone project. Offered to both full- and part-time students, the curricula are deliberately integrated to take advantage of relationships among fields of study. The design of the master's programs permits completion in two years of full-time study. Most classes meet in the late afternoon or evening for the benefit of both full- and part-time students. An increasing number of distance learning options and summer intensive classes offer additional scheduling flexibility.

Graduate programs are interdisciplinary, problem-focused and integrate classroom experience with applied field work. Group assignments, research papers, and guest speakers bring current events into the classroom and students into the halls of the legislature, town planning offices, health centers, and many other public, private, and nonprofit organizations.

The School's relatively small class size and personal approach enable a highly effective system of academic and career advising. The Student Affairs Office and faculty advisers work individually with students to design a program to meet their needs and provide ongoing advice on employment and career opportunities.
