Dr. John Kralewski, Minneapolis, MN
John Kralewski, PhD, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota, has extensive experience conducting research on medical group practices. He has studied the influence of the organization and management of group practices on the costs of care and the internal efficiency of the practice. He led the development of a reliable, validated instrument to measure practice culture. He found that group practice culture influences the type of quality assurance programs adopted by the practice and that the fit between the culture and quality assurance programs influences their effectiveness. Cultural variables are now being included in the group practice research program and the instrument is being used by several other researchers to study the factors influencing group practice performance.
Dr. Kralewski has also studied the relationships between the costs of care and the use of quality improvement programs, efforts to reduce costs in group practices and drug error rates, and financial incentives and the quality of care. His research now focuses on the adoption and implementation of electronic-based clinical and business information systems and the influence of these systems on performance. Dr. Kralewski has worked effectively with medical group practices to conduct studies that often require the acquisition of very sensitive data. His work also demonstrates that high quality research can effectively translate into practice.
