Emerging concerns over coastal ocean acidification and
the effect on shellfish resources, promoted the Casco Bay Estuary
Partnership to hold a "Mud Summit" in January 2013.
The "Mud Summit" was convened to:
review the status of related science and available local information
improve understanding of the relationship between pH and shellfish in the Casco Bay region,
help determine direction for continued efforts, and
help set direction for local and regional
efforts to understand the impact of changing pH on Casco Bay shellfish
and the shellfish industry.
"Mud Summit" Presentations:
Scott Doney, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution -- Overview on Ocean Acidification
Jason Grear, US EPA, Atlantic Ecology Division -- Coastal Acidification and Nutrient Enrichment
Dennis Marc-Nault, Maine DMR -- a review of factors affecting shellfish in Casco Bay
Mike Doan, Friends of Casco Bay -- Friends of Casco Bay 2012 Clam Flat Monitoring
Efforts
Curtis Bohlen, CBEP Director -- Preliminary data from Casco Bay on Clam Abundance and pH
NEXT STEPS: A consensus statement on research
priorities in Casco Bay on the relationship between ocean acidification
and shellfish.
