WAIVER QUESTIONS

Q.        How should supervision for waivers be documented?  How many hours per week do you require?

A.        We have not specified the number of hours of supervision required. The clinically-licensed mental health professional must document that he/she supervised the applicant for at least a year and verify that the applicant has mastered the competencies covered in the course requirement.

Q.        Are general reference letters accepted as waivers?

A.        No.  In order to qualify for a course waiver, applicants must submit a letter from their master’s level, clinical supervisor.  The letter must specifically document how the applicant’s work experience is equivalent to the MHRT/C course requirements.

Q.        If I cannot obtain a letter from my clinical supervisor, may I instead submit a letter from his or her supervisor?

A.        No.  The waiver request must be written by someone who provided direct clinical supervision to the applicant.

Q.        Is a supervisor with a M.Ed. qualified to write waiver requests?

A.        No.  The Master’s degree in Education is not considered a clinical credential. For a list of titles that are accepted for waiver requests, please refer to Waiver Section of the Guidelines.

Q.        If I have 5 years of experience, am I eligible for 5 waivers when I apply for the Provisional MHRT/Community certification?

A.        In order to be approved for waivers, the waiver letters must be written as outlined in the MHRT/Community Guidelines. Only one letter may be submitted for each year of employment. The maximum number of waivers granted is five.
