MHRT I Requirements

Provisional Certification

Provisional certification can be issued by the community agency via completing the form entitled Residential Worker Orientation Form for Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician I Provisional upon completion of the Provisional Mental Health Support Specialist (MHSS) Handbook replaces the 1991 Caring for People with Mental Illness In Community Based Settings manual for Provisional MHRT I certification.  You may download the handbook in your choice of Word or Adobe Acrobat formats.

You may also download the updated Provisional MHRT I certificate in Word or Adobe Acrobat formats.  The Center for Learning will no longer accept any older versions of the Provisional MHRT I certificate.  Please update your files with the current version.

Full Certification

Full certification is granted when the individual has successfully completed the following (No MHRT I requirements can be waived):

  • Mental Health Support Specialist (MHSS, formerly RCS)
OR Residential Care Specialist (DHS approved Residential Care Specialist course completed BY OR BEFORE September 30, 2005--MHSS replaces this training.)
OR Full MHRT/Community (or MHRT II or III) Certification (Effective February 1, 2004)
  • An Intermediate Level NAPPI, Mandt, CPI or DHHS OAMHS-approved behavioral intervention program

  • Medication Dispensing (40 hour Certified Residential Medication Aide course provided by the Maine Health Care Association or comparable course, or 8 hour refresher course)

Please see our MHRT I Resources page for a list of some of the companies/agencies that offer these trainings.

NOTICE!!!!

The American Heart Association changed the formatting of their Heartsaver™ First Aid/CPR card in the summer of 2006.  We now need a copy of both sides of this card if you apply using this training.

As of October 1, 2005, the RCS Curriculum ceased to be taught.  After that date, the new MHSS curriculum replaced RCS and will be accepted in place of RCS.  RCS certificates issued on or prior to September 30, 2005 will remain valid and accepted for MHRT I certification.  Please see the MHSS Page for details.
