Professional Development Workshop Allocations

DHHS-Offices of Adult Mental Health, Adults with Cognitive and Physical Disabilities, and Children’s Behavioral Health Services have allocated funds for professional development of their staff through the Cooperative Agreement with the University of Southern Maine, Muskie School of Public Service, Institute for Public Sector Innovation, Center for Learning. These funds may be used to cover the registration costs for workshops that are not otherwise offered through the Center for Learning or the Department.

Who is eligible to apply?

All non-hospital DHHS Staff employed by the Offices of Adult Mental Health Services, Adults with Cognitive and Physical Disabilities or Children's Behavioral Health Services are eligible to apply for funds to attend outside workshops.

How Does the Procedure Work?

  1. Scott Bernier, Project Assistant with Muskie School, receives the registration request. He processes the registration for payment and sends it along to the USM Business Office in Gorham for payment. Turn around time is usually the same day.
  2. The staff member is sent an e-mail to confirm that the registration has been sent for a request for payment.
  3. Remember that it takes at least 6-10 days for the check to be cut and sent out. That is why it is most important to get your registration requests in time for the process to be carried out. In most cases, the workshop sponsor will not register you until they have the check in hand. Then they usually send out a confirmation to you.
  4. You should check with the workshop a few days before to confirm your registration and to find out if the workshop is full.
  5. Keep a record of your workshop date, time and place so you know where and when your workshop is scheduled.
  6. If you are unable to attend for any reason, you must call the workshop and let them know. Also, e-mail Scott Bernier or call him so that he can follow-up your cancellation and credit your workshop allocation funds.

When Not To Use This Form

You should not use this form for any trainings/conferences sponsored by either the Center for Learning or DHHS-Adult (or Children's) Behavioral Health Services (formerly BDS).  Flyers for CFL-sponsored events will usually have one of the following contact names on it: Elaine Ecker, Julia Mason, George Newell, Scott Bernier or Linda Kinney.  If you use this form for CFL-sponsored trainings/conferences, it could delay your registration for that training/conference.  Such a delay can result in you not being able to get into that CFL-sponsored training.

You do not need to use this form for trainings sponsored by other agencies that are free.  You should still clear attending such events with your supervisor.

Any Questions?

If you have any questions regarding your workshop registration, you may call Scott Bernier during the week between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at 626-5280 or e-mail him at: sbernier@usm.maine.edu
