Center-based Accreditation (NAEYC)

NAEYC COHORT: Application for Maine Roads to Quality Accreditation Facilitation Project 2009

Center-based Accreditation through the National Association for the Education of Young Children with support from Maine Roads to Quality.

Are you thinking about Accreditation for your Program?

  • Consider these questions:
1. We have a stable program administration and teaching staff?
2. We are willing to take a careful, honest look at our strengths and weaknesses?
3. We are eager to hear what others (staff, parents, others outside the program) might suggest about ways we can improve our program?
4. We know how to find support from others who can help us make improvements?
5. Our program administration and all staff members are genuinely concerned about and willing to work together to improve the quality of care and education provided for children in the program?
6. We are familiar with the 10 Accreditation Standards and Criteria?
7. We meet the Candidacy requirements for teacher and administrator qualifications?
(The above questions are listed in "Getting Started," NAEYC Accreditation, National Association for the Education of Young Children.)
  • Review the Eligibility requirements.
  • Learn the 4 Steps.

    1. Enrolling in Self Study

    2. Application

    3. Candidacy

    4. On-site Assessment

  • Understand the Candidacy requirements.
    • IMPORTANT: Meeting Candidacy requirements are necessary in order to become accredited and to be a cohort member. These include teacher and director credentials.
  • Review the 10 Standards and Criteria.
You can purchase the book NAEYC Early Childhood Program Standards and Accreditation Criteria from NAEYC Publications or their online store.

  • Check if all your staff are on the Maine Roads Registry.
    • You can do this by contacting Priscilla Armstrong, Registry Coordinator at parmstro@usm.maine.edu or by phone: 207-780-5846. All staff are required to be on the Maine Roads Registry when the program is in a cohort.
  • Join an Accreditation Cohort
    • If you think you are eligible and meet Candidacy requirements, and would like to be part of a statewide cohort of programs who are pursuing accreditation together, you can download an application (see link at top of this page!)
