What is Approved Training?

In August, 2006, The Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Child and Family Services established a policy and procedure for recognizing other established curricula that would meet training hour requirements for the Direct Care Professional Career Lattice.

Standards to Approve Training:

  • The Training is developed with State of Maine (DHHS) funding or by a recognized national or regional Early Childhood Education organization,
  • The training has a written curricula, clearly defined goals and learning objectives and based upon Maine Early Childhood Core Knowledge areas,
  • The training is delivered by a qualified MRTQ trainer,
  • The training does not duplicate the Maine Roads to Quality Core Knowledge Training curricula,
  • The training curricula must be reviewed by a Training Review Committee (TBD) for content, learning goals and objectives biannually,*
  • The Training curricula‘s content will identify both the Core Knowledge Areas and CDA Subject area hours that are covered,
  • The Training will be eligible for Continuing Education Units (CEUs), and have the potential to be delivered statewide. It is anticipated that this approved training will also be delivered over a period of time longer than a typical one to two hour workshop,
  • The Trainer will keep track of participants and attendance and ensure that information will be sent in a timely manner to the Maine Roads to Quality Registry,

Once a Training program has been approved, it will be recognized by the Maine Roads Registry as approved training and become part of the participant’s training record.

State approved training that is currently being delivered include: Maine Roads to Quality Child Care Leadership Institutes I and II and the Maine Humanities Council’s Many Eyes, Many Voices.

Maine Child Care Leadership Institutes I & II

Child Care Leadership Institute I (30 hours) The Child Care Director Institute I is designed for directors and administrators who are relatively new to their leadership role. The institute focuses on the practical aspects of running a child care center such as payroll, hiring, and licensing issues, as well as the more complex issues of staff supervision, parent communication, and professional ethics. Participants will use a combination of casework, role-play, and scenarios to practice skills and to explore their leadership role.

(Advanced) Child Care Leadership Institute II (30 hours) The Advanced Child Care Director Institute II is a two-session training institute where participants learn, in a hands-on format, the intricacies of center directing. The institute will concentrate on the issues of leadership, supervision, communication and organizational climate. Participants will also explore grant writing, strategic planning and working with a board. This institute is designed to guide an established center director in assessment and refinement of leadership style, facilitative work with staff teams, and continued growth in leadership abilities.

Many Eyes, Many Voices Talking About Difference Through Children's Literature

Many Eyes, Many Voices (6 hours) is a statewide training program that offers high-quality children's picture books, accompanied by a curriculum guide, designed to stimulate meaningful conversations about differences. Participants read and discuss the books, and take part in related exercises and activities in preparation for using the materials with young children. The training is appropriate for preschool teachers, child care providers, literacy specialists, parents and others who have frequent contact with young children aged five and under. Maine Humanities Council staff and consultants selected the books and wrote the curriculum guide. The books and activities were reviewed by an advisory committee of respected educators, child care providers, children's writers, booksellers and librarians. Funding is provided by a grant from Verizon and The Hudson Foundation.
