Minimum Data Set (MDS) Technical Information

Welcome to Maine's Minimum Data Set (MDS) Technical Information Site!

This site provides technical information related to the family of MDS resident assessment instruments used by MaineCare (Maine’s Medicaid program).  The University of Southern Maine (USM) Muskie School of Public Service (MSPS), Institute for Health Policy (IHP) maintains this site on behalf of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

The family of MDS resident assessment instruments includes Minimum Data Sets for:

  • nursing facilities (MDS-NF);
  • residential care facilities (MDS-RCA); and
  • assisted living (MDS-ALS). The MDS-ALS is currently used in Adult Family Care facilities and Housing with Assisted Living Services.

The information stored at this site is intended to assist:

  1. Computer software designers in meeting State requirements concerning the encoding and electronic transmission of MDS assessments
  2. State and Provider staffs with the most current MDS information and resources

MDS What's New

The specifications, file format, and form have changed for the Residential Care facilities to allow for the new correction policy. The correction policy will be in effect July 1, 2004. The form version date is 120103.

The form for the Assisted Living Facilities and Adult Family Care Home has also changed, the new version date is 120103.

The links listed below are for the specifications regarding electronic submission of the Residential Care Assessment as well as the Assisted Living/Adult Family Care Assessment.
