New Report Examines Rural Health Insurance
The Maine Rural Health Research Center at the Muskie School has released a profile of health insurance coverage in rural America. The 68-page chart book shows that rural residents are more likely to be uninsured or received public assistance, especially those living in the most remote areas.
"As the nation considers whether and how to reform the healthcare system to achieve expanded health insurance coverage and access to care, it is important to consider differences in health insurance coverage for those living in rural and urban areas," write authors Jennifer Lenardson, Erika Ziller, Andy Coburn and Nath Anderson.
The report examines recent estimates and changes since 1997, explores key differences between rural and urban residents, profiles the demographic and economic characteristics of the rural and urban uninsured, and offers policy implications for covering the rural uninsured.
