Law Firm of Chadbourne & Parke LLP Contributes $100,000 to USM Muskie School Campaign

November 10, 2004

The international law firm of Chadbourne & Parke LLP has honored its former senior partner, Edmund S. Muskie, with a $100,000 donation to the University of Southern Maine's Muskie School of Public Service.

The gift will help fund construction of a new home for USM's Muskie School, named for the late Maine Governor, U.S. Senator and U.S. Secretary of State. In recognition of the gift, USM will name a room the Chadbourne & Parke Conference Room, which will be used as a classroom and for meetings on a range of public policy issues. The university, which enrolls 11,089 students on campuses in Portland, Gorham and Lewiston-Auburn, will begin planning in 2005 for the new facility on the Portland campus.

"Over the years, the Firm's clients and its lawyers benefited greatly from Senator Muskie's wealth of experience and wisdom," said Charles K. O'Neill, the Firm's managing partner. "This pledge serves not only as a tribute to Edmund Muskie the Governor, the Senator, the Secretary of State and Chadbourne partner, but to the person of Edmund Muskie — a man of great intellect, unwavering principle and utmost integrity. We were most fortunate and proud to have him as a partner in the Firm. In fact, our conference center in our Washington DC office is named after Senator Muskie."

Muskie was a senior partner at Chadbourne & Parke LLP from 1981 until 1996. The firm has offices in New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Houston and in several foreign countries.

"This generous gift from Chadbourne & Parke is not only a testament to Senator Muskie," said USM President Richard L. Pattenaude, "but also reflects a growing nationwide recognition of the USM Muskie School's leadership role in public policy education and research."

"Chadbourne & Parke's decision to honor their former colleague and one of this nation's great public servants enhances our ability to educate current and future leaders, and to address the health and social service needs of citizens throughout all 50 states," said Karl R. Braithwaite, dean of the USM Muskie School.

The school offers master's degree programs in community planning and development, health policy and management, and public policy and management, as well as a doctoral program in public policy. In addition, the school's 300 staff members conduct applied research and offer technical assistance in the fields of health policy, child and family policy and other social services throughout the nation.
