VIDEOS EXAMINING PROGRAMS BENEFITED FROM VAWA FUNDING

In April 2000, the Center for Educational Media, in conjunction with the Muskie School, was funded to develop a series of videos documenting highlights from six different communities across the country. These six videos are the basis of a longer composite version examining an array of programs that have benefited from VAWA funding. Together the state profiles and videos tell the story of the Violence Against Women Act, its impact and how it has transformed communities in the last five years.

The six 12-15 minute videos focus on the following programs:

  • San Diego: The San Diego Domestic Violence Council is a grassroots organization made up of 600 individuals from over 200 organizations with many active committees focused on creating a coordinated community response.
  • Vermont: Have Justice Will Travel serves rural victims of domestic violence working with attorneys from the South Royalton Legal Clinic, a teaching and practicing clinic at Vermont Law School.
  • Utah: Using a Sexual Assault Response Team and a specialized unit within the County Attorney’s office, officials in Cache County have prioritized the prosecution of sexual assaults and other crimes against women.
  • Westchester County: The Westchester County Department of Probation’s “Probation Against Violence” unit uses a model of victim-focused supervision, augmented by high offender accountability and field-oriented offender supervision.
  • Chicago: The Cook County, Illinois Target Abuser Call (TAC) program targets high risk cases at the misdemeanor level. TAC is a multi-agency, prosecution-based unit of prosecutors, investigators, and advocates who develop each case and support each victim as a team.
  • Detroit: The Women’s Justice Center in Detroit, Michigan works cooperatively with two other domestic violence service providers to strengthen civil legal services for battered women with the primary goal of increasing availability of, and access to, free legal representation, shelter, advocacy, job training and more.

Snapshots of Success: Leadership, Commitment and Change: This 30-minute video highlights the six programs described above (closed-captioned).
